About Kanata Central BIA

A Business Improvement Area (BIA) is an association of commercial property owners and tenants within a defined area who work in partnership with the City of Ottawa to create thriving, competitive and safe business areas that attract shoppers, diners, tourists, residents, communities, and new businesses. Beyond that the BIA communicates directly with the Ottawa Police Service, local charities, and other stakeholders to promote the interests of the whole area.

What is a BIA? More information is available here.

The Kanata Central BIA was formed in 2017, with the purpose of representing and advocating for the business community in the area and helping to beautify and/or make improvements to the Kanata Central streetscape. The Kanata Central BIA comprises more than 300 stores and businesses to choose from, and dozens of restaurants and services, it stretches from Terry Fox Drive, Kanata Avenue, and Campeau Drive to Palladium Drive and Katimavik Drive, bordering Eagleson Road.

For details on our stores and businesses, view the Kanata Central BIA store directory.

Boundary Expansion

Kanata Central BIA New Boundary

In the first quarter of 2023, we carried out a research study to explore the viability, benefits, and business dynamics involved with a possible expansion of our current boundaries. As a result of this study, the Kanata Central BIA proposed an expansion to its existing boundaries, to include and welcome businesses to the North, East and South of its current boundaries. A lot has happened since the creation of our BIA in 2017. Expanding our BIA boundaries will allow us to grow with the community and finally include and extend our service offerings to more Kanata businesses, becoming even stronger, together.

As new mixed-use commercial and residential buildings and developments are emerging along Kanata Ave and Campeau Drive, the businesses outside our current boundary need help and the Kanata Central BIA can assist, draw awareness, and help them grow. Businesses that are located just outside our current Business Improvement Area district steadily ask to join the Kanata Central BIA, pre, during, and post COVID-19. The Kanata Central BIA can help to fill empty units and support existing businesses and engage our community.

If you are a PROPERTY OWNER or BUSINESS within the expansion area on the map, please get in touch with our team to make sure we have your contact details on file. Stay tuned as we embark on this exciting journey together!

BIA Structure

Board of Directors

BIAs are run by a volunteer Board of Management elected by its members. The Board is nominated at an Annual General Meeting and once approved by Ottawa City Council, serves a four-year term concurrent with the term of Council. The Board works on behalf of the BIA and meets regularly to develop budgets, set priorities, implement capital improvements, plan festivals, and promote its business area. BIAs use their own money in an ongoing effort to draw more prospective customers to their area by improving the attractiveness of the area and promoting it as a good place to shop, visit and do business.

Join Our Board of Directors!

We’re looking for dedicated BIA members who want to help shape the future of Kanata Central! While all members are welcome to apply, we are especially looking for representation from the restaurant and health care sector.
